The team of scientists Led by Edwin Jager which is a senior lecturer in Sensor and Actuator Systems in the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at Linkoping University, used a “polymer actuator” which is made of polypyrrole. Polypyrrole is an organic compound and a polymer of the pyrrole. It has high electrodynamic properties, and Its volume can change when it is subjected to an electric current. The Polymer actuator composed of three layers by the scientists With a thin membrane between two layers of the electroactive polymer.
How This Artificial Muscles Works?
The material on one side of the thin membrane receives a positive electrical charge and depose the ions, which causes it to shrink. While this is happening, on the other hand, the material raises a negative electrical charge and receives ions, which causes it to expand. And this causes the actuator to turn in one direction, in the same way as the organic muscles contract.
The fact that makes this latest invention most effective is that these artificial muscles do not need any source of voltage to work. it’s can get the power by simply immersing the actuator into a solution of glucose and water. Along with this method, It also can be powered by the battery.
“These enzymes convert glucose and oxygen, in the same way as in the body, to produce the electrons required to power motion in an artificial muscle made from an electroactive polymer. No source of voltage is required: it’s enough simply to immerse the actuator into a solution of glucose in the water”, says Edwin Jager, senior lecturer in Sensor and Actuator Systems, in the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology at Linköping University.
Now after getting success in the first step, the next target for researchers is to control biochemical reactions in the enzymes, as the speed can be reversible for many cycles. They have already demonstrated that speed is reversible, but that time they used a small trick to do this. Now they want to create a system that is close to the organic muscles.
